KFAI is within reach of its goal; however it is the lowest
goal set in a while.Even after the goal is reached, a short fall of $100,000
still looms ahead. To counter this and have funds to grow, KFAI needs continual
support from all quarters. We need quantifiable numbers to share with grant writers,
NPR, and business.Share the cause everywhere, let everyone know about KFAI,
weigh in with comments Ideas, and pledges.A pledge of any size is better than any rating number.Support your favorite show, with comments, pledges and let
your voice be heard.

Viva Italia on Live From Studio 5!
Sound and Shiny Things
By Dewglass
There are a lot of things going on during the” Live From Studio 5!” show.
Producers are preparing for their show, or doing pre or post production.
Usually not much attention is paid, unless it pertains to Music or instruments.

The Thug heard some interesting music emanating from the news room and checked inside. What he saw was curious and intriguing: A gentleman, Giovanni Volini, who looked like an extra right out of a Francis Ford Coppola movie playing a giant harmonica. But where were the orchestral sounds coming from? His iPhone! He decided on the spot to ask him if he wanted to perform on the show and his companion said, "He doesn't speak English but I'll ask him." The rest is history.

The sounds coming from the chromatic harmonica were amazing, almost as if 3 people were playing harmonicas.
Giovanni, who hails from Torino Italy, brought his virtuoso harmonies to 2 clasical pieces.
Concerto for 2 violins by Vivaldi, and La Danza by Rossini

The Wayward McCoys on Live From Studio 5!
LOVE IT LIVE
By Dewglass
In a live situation, everything that can go wrong, will and usually does.
Sometimes the stars align and things go amazingly well.
It started off as usual; a band without a lot of press or video, so we only had Bandcamp downloads to go by.
So I guess I was a little nervous.
I did not have to be on the bands account.

The Wayward McCoys brought a trio in and the live energy we covet on the show.
There is W M D and these guys have W M B, Wayward McCoys Band.
Doug the thug fell in love with the guitars, so if you want an in, just bring in a beautiful or unusual instrument.
First I will share what they say about themselves. The band's account
People call us a real wang dang doodle. No fat, no frills.
Full Bio:
Ben, Joe and Jon each have three-letter names so they started a band. It's called The Wayward McCoys. Ben wails real loud, yet is also very informative. Ben thinks his songs are pretty good, but really that's actually your call. Music is subjective, after all. Joe plays the drums real loud and looks real happy. People are always telling him how happy he looks when he plays the drums. Honestly. People that don't even like the music will almost always concede that Joe looked "amusing". Jon rattles floors with his bass guitar and has developed a reputation for bouncing. He's more like Tigger, people say. When this guy drops the ball, abort. The music just really sounds thin without the bass. It's kinda like a train, tumbleweed, and 2 vultures in a tree started a band...people say.

In general, The Wayward McCoys are difficult to catch as they are primarily a migratory species. Their debut Album "Greasy Clean" emerged and houses 10 songs that deserved it. The tracks span depravity and jubilation, and go well with whiskey or beer. Maybe even pair with a big ol' flank steak if you've got the fire to cook it. They're not really a force to be reckoned with, but The Wayward McCoys are not going anywhere. Does that make sense? They cannot offer you sex or money or the pleasures offered in corporate music. Bottom line: when rock 'n' roll is needed, they'll show up. Darn tootin'.
You absolutely must hunt down these migratory animals, and grab some music for your ipad as a trophy.
The energy level in the studio was high.
If we could have attached wires I think we could have run the show, just on them.

Whatever category you feel you must put Wayward Mc Coys into, the main one must be fun, and second energy.
I challenge you to see them live and avoid dancing.
The lineup:
Ben Greenwald - Vocals, Guitar

The Peace Life on Live From Studio 5!
DAYS OF THE FUTURE PAST
By Dewglass
On a Wednesday night it seemed quiet and peaceful, a duo was coming in and we had a complement of regulars.
Cher Dial and Casey Moo were hosting with me and Doug the Thug bringing up the rear.
Georgia Cady, Host of Sonic Pleasure on KFAI, was at the ready with video.
Of course we couldn’t do it without Sputnik , our broadcast engineer, and Wyatt Sarber, our Sound Engineer.
Add Jerry Isgreat, a one-man video company who can render a video using three or four cameras in less than an hour.
What you get is an amazing night and the closest we have come to Pro media.
The Peace Life entered the confines of Studio 5! And brought the singer song writer genre’ with them.
The duo, is a collaboration of, Jack - Acoustic Guitar, Vocals and Tess'ailene - Vocals
I don’t mean to be picky, but I thought maybe a tambourine or a shaky rhythm thing would have been cool.
The group’s social conscience comes through in their music, with songs about global warming.
And a haunting remake of a folk classic rendered to modern times with Tray, a song about the Trayvon Martin shooting.
It did bother me at first to hear the melody, as I was expecting a Dylan tune, but after listening a few times, I am finding it to tell a story that we must not forget.
There were some bare feet, although no food was served, so it was not a problem.
The lyrics are thoughtful, and the melodies engaging, like the world they sing about, it grows on you.
I hope they consider some future collaboration, as some of the songs would lend themselves well to orchestration, Violins, bass etc.
The Peace life has a core body of work I think you are going to want to follow.

THE DRUG BUDGET ROCKS STUDIO 5!
THE DRUG BUDGET ROCKS STUDIO 5!
BY DEWGLASS and Doug the Thug
Many of the world’s artists will tell you their best work is a happy accident. On June 4th one such accident happened. Originally The Mythological horses were booked to play Live From Studio 5!
The Horses are a touring band, with a tight schedule that included a local gig on the 5th. As fate would have it, one of the Horses developed a medical problem, rendering him unable to fly. If a mythological horse can’t fly, future gigs had to be canceled, including Live From Studio 5! The feelers were out fast and furious, including an invitation to a local music force.
The Drug Budget started as a four piece rock band and the group morphed into an array of music fused together with energy and fun.
A desire to piss off a record producer backfired into something amazing, thus the happy accident
.
.
For this performance band consisted of vocalists Roni Goldstein, KC Mae Ness and Mae Violet. The keyboard player is Paul Treiber. Robert Fones played the Kazoo, Alex Paetznick played the trombone, Lily Morris on trumpet, and Mary Scott played the sax. The drummer was Tom Tier, T.D. on bass, Linus Kangas shredded the lead guitar and his brother Cedric Kangas was the lead singer.
Take a core rock group, sprinkle in a horn section, vocal harmonies and backup singers, and you get The Drug budget. So my dear venues, if you want to fill up your space, consider offering these folks a residency.
With a foretaste of their show in the studio, give them the freedom of a stage and I know they would take full advantage of it. You see they are not just another musical group, they are a group of like-minded performers all going in the same direction. There was movement and dance and a musical mind meld that was infectious.
Comments made to me after the show were, "loved it", "best show ever", to name a few.
The Drug Budget had no trouble at all filling the shoes of the Mystical Horses. We will try and book the Horses for a future date when the flight surgeon clears them to fly. Sometimes fate just tosses you something great, so I encourage you to follow this group, and experience their energy for yourself. The Drug Budget seems to be ever-expanding, so maybe you might even be able to join them. I don’t believe they are through fusing music styles, so maybe the next record will be even more mind-blowing and if you the listener and fan lobby hard enough, we will have them back on the show soon.

Usually just coordinating a small group in the studio is a challenge, but twelve? These folks made it a joy to have them and far from the usual managed chaos.

BUMPS IN THE ROAD
BUMPS IN THE ROAD
I fell in love with the show and was happy just to be involved.
Working in a volunteer environment has its own special challenges.
It was not too long that, I went from the fill-in understudy for Casey Moo, music composer, singer and phenomenal voice, to the show's announcer.
As we continued on, we lost volunteers as folks took new jobs, or made other life changes that no longer included the show.
I was pressed into service to fill in and added another hat to the mix.
As more things were added, I felt a bit unsure, as I had been out of media for a while.
When I found myself as the producer of the show, I was not comfortable, but felt I needed to stretch myself so I could be more useful to the show and myself.
I am grateful to have had the experience, although at times not pleasant ones.
The show comes first with me, and I am glad to be a part of serving the under-served music community.
"Live from Studio 5!" has gotten past 200 shows, and we are now working with a fraction of people we need.
Many more dedicated volunteers are needed to do these shows. To do more and offer more, we have to increase participation.
There is a lot of behind the scenes work that makes one wonder, why we do this for free.
KFAI is a great community resource, and "Live From Studio 5!" is a place for bands and artists to share their musical journey.
Personally, I have gotten more than others have given.
The show does need a re-tool, but to do that we need people to join and grow with us.
Wednesday night is a tough night to get people, especially if they need to work a day job that starts at 7am.
If media is your passion, and you can do 10pm to midnight on aWednesday night, let us know.
There are things that can be done outside the show, via social media, video editing, etc.
Polish your skills and add to your portfolio, help produce and design the new “LIVE FROM STUDIO 5!”
The show is at a crossroads, and needs new people, just to continue, never mind expand.
It would be a shame to have to close down a great resource, just because we ran out of people.
So dear readers, give it some thought, and talk to your peeps, come help us make a great thing even greater.
Contact Pam Hill at KFAI to volunteer, she will forward your request.
Thanks for reading
